We always enjoyed watching the pandas at the zoo. Sometimes they would be sleeping in the oddest position in the trees, it’s a wonder that they could sleep like that. Mostly they would sit eating their bamboo. Regardless of what they were doing, the fluffy baby was generally the center of attention. It was a bit sad to have them leave.
To make the prints shown here I chose to use Sumi rather than the usual printmaking ink. Sumi is a much thinner consistency and by using it on different types of paper I can get either a wood block effect or a more solid print.
This panda image is one that I carved on a “Speedball” printing block. It has held up well over multiple prints, I have used this panda design on handmade cards, chip wood boxes and prints for framing.
Seeing it always brings back fond memories of our panda viewing visits to the zoo.
