A friend that is a ceramic artist once told me that sometimes our best work is what we do while taking a class.
At the time I was discussing the inability to capture drawing the same way I did in my college art classes. There was a focus then that I do not have now. Of course part of that is because I had fewer distractions. There was more time to dedicate to the drawing process before I started working full-time. Being in a class helps us have uninterrupted drawing time.
I dropped the practice of daily drawing years ago and now that I look back at the projects I saved it is difficult for me to duplicate even these beginner projects.
Keeping this experience in mind and with a bit of encouragement from my son, I now schedule studio time for myself. I do not meet up with my artist self daily yet, but actually putting the time in my planner is helping me to practice more than I have been. It is a relaxing time that I use to focus on what is in front of me and tune everything else out.
My goal is to go back to the drawing board (literally) and keep practicing so that I can draw quick sketches to capture the images I see daily.
