Napkin Collage

I enjoy making napkin collage projects.  Napkins and tissues make wonderful collages because they are light weight and very easy to adhere to multiple surfaces.

When shopping for chocolate bars I found these colorful napkins in the clearance area.  The festive and colorful pattern makes them perfect for adding color to one of my art journal pages.  I call this my “celebration” page.   (Pictured as the feature photo on this post). For the background on this page I added the deli tissue I painted using bubble wrap.  I also added a scrap of sheet music to make the page ‘sing’.

After making my napkin collage celebration page I decided to use the napkins to make birthday cards.

The additional torn papers are scraps of painted deli paper from another one of my projects. The deli paper is great for layering because it is light weight so it does not add a lot of bulk to the card.  Time to celebrate again.

In a past post I wrote about a package of tissues I received in a gift bag from a friend. They go well with this napkin collage theme so I am reposting them here with more detail and an additional card idea.

Here I used the tissues as the topper to a greeting card.

First I painted the background paper with acrylics.

Another background technique I often use is to spray deli paper with ink for a splattered look.  I also use deli paper under my projects to protect the table from over spray of inks and paint splotches.  The result is a varied background of mediums and colors. After separating the layers of the tissue I cut out the shapes I wanted to use on my card and attached them with gel medium.  To flatten all the edges I cover the tissue with waxed paper and roll over it with a brayer working quickly so the waxed paper does not stick to the design.  To finish this one I collaged the deli tissue and a bit of gold candy wrapper.

For this card I used an open frame type card front.

The decorative paper is attached beneath the “window”.   I finished the card by adding the tissue cut outs and scraps of deli paper that I previously stamped on. Again, a bit of gold candy wrapper is added for accents.

Most of these cards are appropriate for a variety of occasions so I do not add a sentiment until I know who the recipient will be.

I hope this gives you some good ideas about how to use the leftover napkins from your next celebration. Please drop a comment to let me know how it worked out for you.
