Read a Book Day

In recognition of ‘Read a book’ day this week, I am sharing my thoughts about a couple of quotes that spoke to me from these two books. To clarify, these are my thoughts, not the writer’s.

Today We Go Home by Kelli Estes is the story of women in the military contrasting the Civil War era and present times.

“Home is not where you live but where they understand you” Christian Morgenstern

It is a comfortable feeling to be with folks that really understand us.  There is comfort in not needing to explain ourselves because we are already accepted as we are, understood as we are. It allows us the freedom to just be ourselves.

Being understood is such an important part of all our relationships.  It builds and strengthens both families and friendships. Sometimes those friend relationships are even closer than the ones with our birth families. I am very thankful for the connections I have with family and friends that truly understand me and like me just as I am.

Different Seasons by Stephen King. This book was recommended to me by my son. It is a collection of four novellas. And he was right, I did like it.

“The most important things are the hardest to say because words diminish them…”  Stephen King

I liken it to attempting to describe the quietness and beauty of seeing the sunrise while driving to work in a way that the listener will ‘see it’ through my words.  The neighborhood I drive through is still asleep that early. Will my listener sense the quietness of the neighborhood?  Will my words impress them as deeply as seeing and hearing it firsthand does? Maybe, maybe not. Still, I try.

At times it is difficult to put into words the excitement and feelings of an event that touches us deeply. Maybe because these events involve multiple senses of hearing, sight, feelings and we attempt to condense them down to language.

Even though the listener is interested in the event being described having the same intensity of feelings sometimes does not happen.  And of course, because we are all different we see things differently.

However, it is still wonderful to share our stories.  To relive the feelings and to bring others along with us in our excitement.
