Journaling Techniques

What are your favorite journaling techniques? Are you a full page decorator or do you prefer more space for writing your thoughts? There are many journaling techniques, styles and subjects and sometimes it takes a few tries before finding the ones we enjoy the best.  I prefer a variety of styles.  Often my choice is simply determined by the amount of time I have.

Other than my art journal which I have shared before, the following are the day-to-day techniques I use when my time is limited.  I need to also say that I do not pressure myself to journal every day.

Washi tapes
My son gave me a variety of washi tapes to add to my collection. These included washi stickers too. They are a fun addition to my journal pages and cards.

It is nice to have a place to keep quotes and Bible verses, though this one is a page in my day-to-day journal I am thinking of using a separate journal dedicated to embellishing quotes.

Bible verse journal
For this page I lightly inked a random pattern through a stencil before adding the stickers and quote.

Rubber stamping is another method to add a focal point to the page. This is my “what if” page.  I wanted to see how a stamp pattern within a stamped frame looks.  I have not decided how I will use this page.  I might use the framed area for quotes or for gratitude entries

rubber stamping
The design within the frame is a section of a larger background stamp. The frame is lightly inked around the edges to add depth.

The poppy is from a previous painting I did. I fussy cut it to attach onto the frame.

This is my basic journal page however, I do not usually write this much.  I wrote this at the start of my vacation and had a lot of thoughts going on in my head.  Also, it was the same day the washi tapes arrived and I couldn’t wait to use them. I leave a lot of space for writing. And, I decorate the pages ahead of time before writing because I enjoy opening the journal to an already colorful page.

The background for this page is inked splotches. I inked a plastic block, misted it lightly and randomly “stamped” it on the pages. The stickers and washi tape borders were added after the page dried.

I hope this gives you a few ideas to apply to your journal pages and card making too. Drop a comment and let me know how it goes for you.
