Halloween Card Ideas

Here are some Halloween card ideas to help you brighten someone’s day.  It is fun to receive cards in the mail. And when it is handmade there is an additional personal touch.  A nice break from the junk mail and bills that usually show up in the mailbox. Handmade cards are also a fun family project.

An easy background technique is to use a cellulose sponge dipped in paint to cover the surface of your paper.  This works on watercolor, cardstock or printer paper.  The thinner your paper the less water you should have in your sponge.  I like to use a square sponge, but round or oblong also work well.

This background is painted on cardstock with acrylic paint. If you prefer a more muted background pattern, you can use watercolor paints.

I layer various scraps of paper on printer paper to make the strip of collage. Using this technique even small scraps of paper can be upcycled. I added random splotches of red paint as accents just because it is my favorite color. The gold accents are from candy wrappers. I get to enjoy candy while I work.

I have quite a bit of vintage Halloween scraps, so here she is again. The little joyful Halloween girl popping out of a pumpkin. The sponged background reminds me of webbing. The card has a whimsical Halloween theme rather than a spooky one.
The pumpkin die cuts are left over from last year’s project.

Greetings for Halloween! I cut the collaged strip of paper in half to use as the background for the these two cards. The verbiage is a sticker and the trim along the edges is washi tape.

A joyful Halloween. The verbiage here is also a sticker. I made this card the same way as the “greetings” card. Though both cards share the same elements, each card is different due to the different patterns in the collage. I think that is one of the things I like most about a finished scrap paper collage.

Have you tried scrap collage backgrounds?  The random patterns give additional interest to the handmade card.  There are bits of words, music and partial images showing though the layers.

As we prepare for the holidays and celebrations winter brings, I hope you will be able to apply these Halloween card ideas to your own creative projects. Take time to brighten each other’s day. Keep creating for yourself, for others
