Gift Card Holders

Let’s recycle used envelopes to make gift card holders. Making your own gift card holders gives you the opportunity to personalize both the gift inside the envelope and the envelope itself. I have not transitioned to on-line billing so I end up with a few junk envelopes. There are multiple uses for them that I will share in upcoming posts.

Another item that I have multiples of is paper from my painting warm up exercises.  The paper is similar to heavy weight tissue paper, referred to as ‘rice’ paper.

I have combined these two scrap papers to make the gift card holders. To prepare the rice paper I sprayed it with various colors of ink before gluing it onto the envelopes.

The envelope on the lower left is one that I sprayed ink directly on the envelope instead of layering paper on it.

After the glue has dried I cut the envelopes in half to make 2 gift card holders.  If you have larger size gift cards you can leave the envelope as its original size.

I use various scraps from my paper stash to make the decorative toppers for the envelopes.  This is a good way to use up paper scraps that are not large enough to use for card backgrounds.  You can also use stamped images and die cuts.

To make the toppers layer various papers and images in small groupings. Here you see old postage stamps, lace scraps, paper scraps, die cuts and torn papers.

Another option to decorate the envelopes is to glue magazine images onto them.  Rubberstamping, stenciling or mark making also work will.

This is an example of an envelope that has been covered with old music paper. The image in the corner is torn from a Christmas card envelope and sequin snowflakes add some sparkle.

A ribbon bow closes the envelope and it is ready to go under the tree.

Though the theme here is for Christmas, the gift card holders are easily adaptable to any occasion.
