Handmade valentines

Here’s a fun way to recycle old envelopes in your handmade valentines.  My envelopes have a variety of patterns and shades of grey.  While doing this project I also discovered some envelopes with a blue pattern.

A handmade valentine is a fun way to let family and friends know that you are thinking about them.  There is an organization that requests handmade valentines to distribute in nursing homes. That’s a great idea, however I didn’t see that notice until yesterday and now there isn’t time to meet the deadline.  I’ll keep the information for next year.

As you can see, there is a nice variety of patterns to work with in my junk mail.

These cards come together quickly and are fun to make. The red background paper was in a package of assorted papers that my son gave me last year. A wonderful discovery.

Love who you are valentine
When I was thrift shopping I found a pad of spring type papers. The heart is cut from one of those sheets. After cutting out the heart shape from the junk envelope I layered it at an angle behind the main heart image. It creates an interesting shadow effect.
The heart rectangle is cut from the same paper that I mentioned earlier. I like the contrast of the bolder patterned junk envelope strip in the background. The junk paper is torn rather than cut in order to add soft edges to the otherwise mostly straight edges.

I painted this heart a long time ago. It is a mix of both watercolor and acrylic paints. Here again I used the bolder print envelope behind the heart. The leaves are a die cut that I cut apart to manipulate the direction they surround the heart image.

I think it would also be interesting to use the junk envelope papers for all the hearts. I have not tried that yet.

Have fun making your cards.  Remember to experiment using whichever supplies you have on hand.  When you can recycle what would have been tossed away; that makes the process even better.

Take care of your creative self.
