In the garden, nature time for yard work

We had a very productive weekend.  Saturday morning Victoria and I worked in the front yard moving dirt that the gophers moved while creating their many tunnels.  They are frustrating little creatures making holes all over the front and back yards.  That part of nature I do not care for.  They leave mounds that keep growing.  A good portion of their damaged area has been flattened and maybe all the earth moving and shaking has scared them away for a long time. The clerk at the nursery recommended planting onion or garlic to help keep the gophers away.  I have planted a few onions, but we do not actually care much for onions, at least not enough to actually grow them. We only fix them caramelized on burgers or chicken.  I am sure I will think of someone we can give them to once they are ready to harvest.

We were also able to pull up the dead areas of ice plant and transplant new plants in the bare spots.  Towards the end of the day I noticed the bees were enjoying the ice plant blooms.  Seeing all the bees is an encouraging sight because I am not sure that I transplanted the new plants correctly, I hope they take root and survive!

We had a good exercise workout shoveling dirt, carrying dirt away and Victoria pushing the wheelbarrow of dirt up the rocky incline to dump the dirt in our upper yard.  Of course it helped that she had her favorite oldies playing on her phone so we could enjoy music to lighten our work.

Music, laughter and the muscle strength of a young helper made the time pass quickly, then the sun came out and our work time came to a close until our next yard work nature time.  It is good to look out the window and see that actual progress was made.
