Fabric Pumpkin Craft

Most of my holiday decorations are years and years old.  I enjoy their age.  Every year when I start decorating the house these items feel as if I am reuniting with old friends.

There are many happy memories behind most to the decorations, especially the older ones.  Memories of painting or making them.  Of the kids helping to decorate the house.  I love to decorate!  However, there does come a time when some decorations have truly seen better days.  Such is the case with these tissue paper covered pumpkins that have started to shed their covering.

Rather than toss them I decided to peel off the remaining tissue and recover them with scrap fabric.  The leaves are cut from the same fabric fused together to hold their shape.  I kept the same stems and now the pumpkins have a new life, fresh for this year.  And they are much sturdier than real pumpkins.

One year I forgot to put a plate under a beautifully carved pumpkin.  It was an unusually hot October and because it was on an out of the way table none of us noticed that the pumpkin was collapsing internally.  It was not until we discovered a puddle of pumpkin ‘juice’ running along the edge of the table that we realized something was “off”.

Fortunately, the table is my work table so it already has paint splatters, glue spots, etc.  But, it is also our ping pong tournament table and the moisture lifted an edge of the veneer.  A bit of wood glue and a couple of clamps have fixed that problem.

The refurbished pumpkins will obviously not be carved, but they will last through October and November and hopefully for many more years to come. More memories in the making.

Do you have decorations that bring special memories?
