While I was making these Valentine cards the other day I was thinking about past Valentine’s Day celebrations.
When the kids were young I helped them make little Valentines for their classmates and teachers. They also made a box type container for the Valentines they would receive. And of course there would be a special valentine for the bestie, though they did not refer to them that way back then. It is interesting the way our language fluctuates over time.
At home the house was decorated with plenty of hearts for our family Valentine’s celebration. Actually, the decorations went up a few weeks before the special day. Our celebration included exchanging valentines and treat time. Usually brownies or cookies and maybe chocolates.
For the past few years our valentine’s celebrations have included exchanging cards and for a while the treats were boxes of cookies. And, I still use plenty of hearts and sparkly garlands for decorations.
The valentine cards I made this year are a little bit different than what I usually make. The blank cards I recently purchased are not the usual centerfold type. I accidentally purchased flat cards similar to large postcards. Not what I wanted, but still able to make them work for my projects.
The toppers are heart cutouts that I stenciled using spray inks. For the base and layers I used doilies, mulberry papers, paper scraps and the background papers I painted to add a splash of color. I like that the layers still lay fairly flat for mailing. They are a fun project to make and make good use of paper scraps from previous projects.
The valentines are in the mail, it is time to plan what our treats will be this year. What is your favorite treat to have for your celebrations?
