Bonsai,earthday,

Bonsai

It’s time to have fun with the bonsai planting kit that my daughter gave me. I have always liked bonsai.  I especially enjoy the bonsai area at our Safari Park. Some are quite old, all are beautiful. It amazes me that the gardener can achieve the variety of trees in miniature.

The kit includes almost everything to get started.  Thankfully there are also plant markers included.

Bonsai,earthday, Nature,Garden,Plants, Blogger,
There are 5 seed packets. I don’t know why I thought one of the packets was fertilizer. So, I ended up with 4 types of seeds planted instead of 5. There is also an extra packet of seeds for future planting. Maybe I will plant the 5th one then also.
The instructions recommend soaking the seeds for 24 hours. As you can see, one of my containers has more seeds in it than I planned for. I did not expect them to be so tiny.
compressed soil discs
The compressed soil reminds me of a round brownie. (Maybe that is wishful thinking). A little bit of water expands the soil disc. It is surprising how much that little disc expands!

After expanding the soil discs and draining the excess water, I placed the soil in the planters.  The kit also includes the degradable planters. They are soft, burlap-like containers. The tiny shovels helped with this process

Bonsai,earthday,
All potted, labeled and ready to sprout into their new world. Look how cute the little tools are.

They are supposed to sprout in 3 – 5 days, right on time to welcome Earth Day.

This was a fun, compact, spring project.

Have fun working in your garden whatever its size. Or, if you are not a gardener, maybe you can enjoy time outdoors visiting one.

Happy spring.  Hopefully I will have sprouts and baby bonsai to share in the upcoming months.
